Marissa's Story
/My name is Marissa Trevino and I am a 25-year-old single mother of two amazing children. When I first came to Nabor House Community I was living alone with my 3-month-old son, Jeremiah. I became desperate to find childcare for him because the family member who was helping me watch him while I went to work told me she was no longer going to be available. Daycare never crossed my mind because of all the horrific stories I had heard on the news. But at this point it was my only option. I took a trip to Nabor House Community and toured the facility and met the staff, and by the end I was in tears because all I could do was hope and pray that my son was receiving the best care. After discussing the tuition, I was in disbelief at the affordability! She reassured me that this price was set for me, and we scheduled his first day in early January 2019. I remember on his first day I cried leaving him, and every day after that for about two weeks. By the third week, as soon as Jeremiah was greeted at the door by his teachers, his eyes lit up and he had the biggest smile on his face! It was then that I knew my son was in great hands and he was so loved, and highly favored. I was so grateful for his teachers and office staff that helped him grow and learn so much. By the end of 2019 I was blessed with my daughter, Ruby, and she then joined the Nabor House family in February 2020 at only 6 weeks old. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 the center had to shut down, as did the rest of the world, shortly after she had arrived. After months of waiting for things to normalize in the world, Nabor House Community reopened and the kids were able to return!
I work for a foster care and adoption agency, DePelchin Children's Center, and I've been there for six and a half years. I have been abundantly blessed in my career, as I come from the foster care system myself, and have been able to advance as well as learn and experience new things in my field. But in all honesty, I wouldn't have been able to maintain my career if I didn't have the reliable childcare that I receive from Nabor House Community, as well as going to back to college. I am all my kids have and I want to be the best example for them. I continuously share my accomplishments with the staff and to see the joy in their faces is an incredible feeling. Mrs. Dalila and Mrs. Samantha have been there for me since day one, and they have watched me grow into the woman I am today. They've seen the struggles I've faced alone, except I wasn't alone, I had Nabor House Community. I am truly proud of myself, and how far I've come on my own with my two kids. And to know that on August 12, 2022, my son Jeremiah will be graduating from his preschool classroom and will be attending Pre-K in an elementary school is beyond me! It feels like just yesterday I was bringing him in with all his diapers and formula for his first day.
My kids have learned and grown so much over the years, and I give all praise to the amazing teachers who have cared for them. Being a fulltime employee and student, as well as a single mother of two is very overwhelming, and sometimes I feel like I fall short on some things -one of those things is being a teacher to my kids. But when we come home and I see them pointing out numbers, colors and animals I know that all comes from Nabor House. Right now, their greatest accomplishments are learning how to spell their names -my 3-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter can spell their names! How crazy is that? It saddens me that in just a couple years my daughter will be graduating from Nabor House as well and we will have to part ways. But one thing I know is Nabor House Community and all its staff will always be our family.
